Temperatures averaged 0.8°F (0.4°C) above normal here in Bergenfield, New Jersey during this past April with an average of 53.4°F (11.8°C). A maximum temperature of 88°F (31.1°C) was reached on the 29th. The minimum of 33°F (0.6°C) was recorded on the 8th.

Precipitation was a bit below normal at 3.58" ( 89.7mm ). No snow was noticed during month.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch on the 3rd as heavy showers accompanied by strong winds swept through the region. I recorded more than 2.00" of rain along with a wind gust of 41mph( ENE). There was some localized minor street flooding in Bergenfield. We normally get our last frost of the season during the last half of the month but this April was frost-free.

Two new daily records were set this month. The maximum temperature of 88°F on the 29th set a new daily mark along with a wind gust of 34mph (SE) on the 12th.

April saw above normal temperatures and precipitation.
The average temperature for April was 52.9° which was +1.2° above the New Brunswick 1991-2020 average. Helped by the unseasonably warm last few days of April, this marked the fifth straight month with higher-than-average temperatures. The high for the month was a summer-like 89° on the 29th (one of 4 days with temperatures in the 80s). The low was 29° just a week earlier on the 22nd. Last year, April averaged 55.1° at Canal Walk (and statewide, it tied for the third warmest April since records started in 1895).

Precipitation for April totaled 4.71” which was +0.82” (+21%) above the New Brunswick 1991-2020 average. The month started with a strong nor’easter coastal storm that impacted the region on the 3rd and 4th with heavy rain and wind (54 MPH gust at Teterboro). The northwest part of the state saw up to 2” of snow as part of the storm. A low barometer reading of 29.24” was recorded in Somerset on the 4th. About 35k homes lost power in NJ from trees and power lines down from the nor’easter. In total, the first 5 days of April saw 3.23” of rain in Somerset (83% of the normal month’s total). For all of Aoril, 19 days had a trace or more of precipitation. YTD precipitation totals 20.11” (+34%) which compares to 15.80” at the end of April in 2023.

A couple of final notes about March’s weather. State-wide, March 2024 was the third wettest March on record, with an average 7.76” of precipitation (trailing only 8.03” in 1912 and 8.66” in 2010). We recorded 7.63” in Somerset. Also, March was the 9th warmest on record at 46.0°, but still significantly below the all-time record of 49.8° in 2012. Somerset had an average of 46.2°.


Jeff Kunick in Cedar Grove, New Jersey

For the 1964-2024 April averages, temperature was 2.8º warmer than normal, precipitation was 0.14” below normal, and snowfall was 1.0” below normal. No daily high or low temperature, precipitation, or snowfall records were set. Temperature for the year is 42.6° which is 5.1° above normal. Precipitation for the year stands at 23.58” which is 7.19” above normal. Snowfall for the season remains at 19.1” which is 18.4” below normal. Thunder was observed on the 3rd and the 30th. No severe weather was noted.

Both maximum and minimum temperatures this month have been a little above average. A warm spell between the 20th and 25th saw the establishment of 5 new daily highest maxima. Thanks to a wet spell at the beginning of the month, rainfall has been 220% of normal.
